Shuffleboard Materials Guide

Shuffleboard table materials:

Wood

The finest shuffleboard tables are made from high-quality wood. Maple is the wood most often used for the playing fields on shuffleboard tables. Maple is light colored, highly durable, and stains well. Mahogany and oak are two of the woods often used for other shuffleboard table features such as handrails and legs.

Laminate

A laminate is a protective covering (often plastic) applied to a material substrate. Laminated hardwood is commonly used in shuffleboard table construction.

Wood grain vinyl

Wood grain vinyl is a synthetic material designed to resemble real wood. Wood grain vinyl is less expensive and less durable than real wood, but provides a similar appearance to high-end shuffleboard tables.

Polymer

Polymer is a highly resistant synthetic compound applied to the surface of shuffleboard tables. Polymer is a very useful shuffleboard material that eliminates the need for frequent refinishing.

Shuffleboard court materials:

Concrete

Concrete is the material most often used for constructing outdoor shuffleboard courts. Because concrete does not provide a naturally slick surface, beads and wax must be used when playing on a concrete shuffleboard court.

Plastic

Plastic is a material commonly used in the construction of roll out shuffleboard courts. Plastic is an inexpensive alternative to concrete, providing a smooth playing surface as well as easy assembly and storage.

Poly-reinforced vinyl

Poly-reinforced vinyl is another common material alternative to outdoor concrete shuffleboard courts. The acronym PVC refers to polyvinyl chloride, a plastic commonly used as a building material substitute.

Aluminum & fiberglass

Along with wood, aluminum and fiberglass are the materials most often used in shuffleboard cue construction. The shafts of fiberglass shuffleboard cues are wrapped in smooth polyester and are stronger and more durable than aluminum shuffleboard cues.
